The O-lo-lo Feast of the Nymylan
Every year in autumn, the Nymylan (coastal Koryak) celebrate the feast of reconciliation with nature in their settlements Lesnaya and Kinkil. During the feast, they take solemn leave of the souls of the animals they have killed during the year. Once the souls have arrived in the world beyond, they are supposed to tell the people that they have been served ritual dishes and well entertained by joyful songs and dances. Their respectful treatment is meant to ensure that more animals come back in the following years. Preparations and the program of the feast are described in the article Versöhnungsfeste mit der Natur im Nordosten Sibiriens. An extensive documentation of the feast can be found in the book Worldviews and Ritual Practice – Coastal Koryaks (Nymylans) and the accompanying DVD.
