Festive clothing of the Even

This Even festive clothing is in the collection of the Ethnological Museum (Staatliche Museen zu Berlin - Preußischer Kulturbesitz) under the signature I A 2247. Height and width are given as 101 x 49 cm (shoulder width) and the acquisition is dated 1887. The provenance is largely unclear and in the documentation at the time, Tungus or Yakut were noted.

During a museum research Erich Kasten noticed this object, because he had documented similar clothing for the Evens on Kamchatka before. During a later journey to Siberia this object was explained to him on the basis of photos during a seminar in Yakutsk by the Even Alyona Nikolaevna Chabarovskaia. The recording is available as a transcript and in translations. This allowed the valuable item of clothing to be documented more thoroughly for the museum collection. At the same time, the indigenous community is being given access in this way to hitherto unknown older stocks of their cultural heritage – which indigenous craftswomen can draw on in the further development of their traditions. The documentation was discussed in an article.
