Children's Drawings

Erich Kasten co-organized a painting competition for children in Korvan in 1993 during the Alkhalalalai Feast. He later took up this theme for the exhibition Children's Drawings from Siberia and the North Pacific Rim that he organized at the Franckeschen Stiftungen (1998), and which then toured several German museums. Together with indigenous educators he co-organized children's drawing competitions for schools in Itelmen, Even and Koryak communities on this occasion. Some drawings were accompanied by essays the children wrote. The exhibition catalogue also presents some other case studies from the Kwakwaka’wakw of the Canadian Pacific Northwest as well as Evenk, Chukchi and Yupiit.

A subsequent collection of Nanai texts included drawings by youths that were included in the project and illustrated the stories.
