Koryak language

Erich Kasten documented Koryak language and culture together with Aleksandra Urkachan from 2000 until 2013 in Kamchatka. A part of the total of 96 hours of video recordings has been processed and is available in book form and on DVD (see below). These recordings are useful above all as learning materials in Kamchatka to sustain the endangered Koryak language and the indigenous knowledge it conveys. They were presented during joint field trips in local schools and cultural institutions. In Palana, Aleksandra Urkachan regularly used these materials during cultural events.

Recordings in Koryak language on the following individual topics:

  • Remembrances of the past
  • Traditional ecological knowledge
  • Arts and crafts
  • Songs and dances
  • Tales
  • Worldviews and ritual practices

These Koryak language recordings will be also stored under the title Documentation of the Koryak Language and Culture in Kamchatka (Kasten, Erich 2019) at the Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR), SOAS, London. On its Deposit page the project is presented in more detail.
