Nanai language
The Gesellschaft für Bedrohte Sprachen e.V. (Society for Endangered Languages) supported a project by Erich Kasten to sustain the Nanai language, receiving Tat’iana Bulgakova as visiting scholar at the Foundation for Siberian Cultures from January 10-24, 2012. She is an expert on the Nanai language and culture, teaching at the Herzen Institute in St. Petersburg. Together with Erich Kasten and Michael Dürr, parts of her extensive audio recordings of the Nanai language have been digitized and prepared for permanent storage.
A first collection of texts in Nanai and Russian was published from this material and linked to audio files for lessons in the Khabarovsk area. Young Nanai artists were also involved in this project, illustrating motifs from the texts in drawings.
As a follow-up, other works by Tat’iana Bulgakova have been published by the Foundation for Siberian Cultures: the collection of texts Kamlaniia nanaiskikh shamanov (Nanai Texts on Shamanic Healing) and the monograph Nanai Shamanic Culture in Indigenous Discourse.
