Tyvans
The Tyvans – a people of southern Siberia
The Tyvans, called Tuvinians in some older writings, live in southern Siberia, between the Altai Mountains and Lake Baikal. In the region of this people speaking a Turkic language, the cultural traditions of ethnic groups from the northern Siberian taiga and the bordering steppes to the South of Mongolia and northern China meet.
Being in close contact with the neighboring peoples, the Tyvans have developed diverse forms of using the environment, complex worldviews and multi-layered – mostly shamanistic – rituals. Their social life is punctuated by impressive festivals across the seasons. All of these aspects and their interaction are the subject of Anett C. Oelschlägel’s book Plurale Weltinterpretationen (Plural ways of interpreting the world). The slideshow from her photos illustrates different domains of their life.
