Arts and crafts

Arts and crafts presents objects of daily use, especially clothing, that are often a reflection of aesthetic and symbolic expression.

Arts and crafts

Arts and crafts are not considered separate entities by the peoples of the North, but as one. Objects of daily use often bear symbolic signs lending the objects extra meaning. The objects serve to facilitate discourse with supernatural powers, often related to the function of the object. An ornament may also be the expression of individual or collective identity. The artistic design of such objects frequently reflects the aesthetic principles of the culture they represent.

Clothing

The clothing of the Even on Kamchatka resemble in cut and ornamental motifs the tradition of the Tungus. They are therefore very different from the clothes and decorative arts of the 8 other indigenous peoples of Kamchatka. However, some stylistic elements and techniques have been adapted as part of an exchange between these peoples and incorporated into their own traditions, as Jochelson already noted among the Koryak in the early 20th century. More recent works have also dealt with such questions.
