Itelmen songs
by Tat'iana Gutorova
Tat'iana Evstropovna Gutorova was born in 1930 in the Itelmen village of Khairiuzovo on the west coast of Kamchatka. She lived later until her death in 2003 in Petropavlovsk- Kamchatski. Erich Kasten recorded these songs there in 1999.
Tat'iana Gutorova has been rehearsing Itelmen songs with her granddaughter Elena Zueva for her tour in Germany. The first songs are the Eagle's song and the Song of the Dying Mother from the legend El'vel' that Tat'iana Gutorova recorded in 1970 from her mother Arina Slobochikova. The third song is from the village of Utkholok that was passed down to her from her grandmother Slobochikova (Ruzkhchikhi). At the end she sings a joking Khodila song. The full text of these songs is given in Istoriko-etnograficheskoe uchebnoe posobie po itel'menskomu yazyku, (pp. 72-76) as well as the legend El'vel' in Itelmen texts (pp. 108-115).
